Amit Paul’s homecoming evokes a sense of deja vu in Voice of India Debojit
Saha...
From what I hear, Amit will be accorded a grand reception in Guwahati tomorrow
and then in Shillong on October 4 — and I can well imagine what a homecoming
it will be for the young singer. Trust me, I know. I know what it feels like —
a small-town singer returning home after conquering the world.
Amit may have lost the Indian Idol crown at the last hurdle but to me, he is a
hero. Not only is he the idol in his hometown Shillong and the rest of
Meghalaya, but an inspiring figure in the entire Northeast.
Amit went out of the contest a graceful winner, ever smiling and with his head
held high. He should be proud of his achievements for he is simply a wonderful
singer, who can sing in so many languages.
I am not claiming to have become the best singer, but what I remember is the
love and best wishes showered on me when I reached Assam after winning the
Voice of India title in the musical reality show on ZEE TV. The scenes are
still etched indelibly in my memory as if it was only yesterday.
What delights me more is the fact that right after the Indian Idol contest —
which has made him a star — Amit will be cheering contestants at a similar
contest, TVS College Icon, being organised as part of the ongoing Guwahati
Mahotsav that has begun at Sonaram High School field. And I have also learnt
that Amit will sing at the Mahotsav (tomorrow evening) in front of the people
of Guwahati.
I remember the day when I was felicitated by the people of Guwahati after I
completed my one year as Voice of India in March. The venue was the Assam
Engineering Ground in Guwahati where I had also performed, but briefly.
As for the TVS College Icon contest — a singing talent contest for college
students — I can only say that it is a very nice concept and will surely see
many new talents emerge.
I want to congratulate the organisers for thinking on the lines of Indian Idol
and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa music reality shows to discover young singing talent of
Guwahati. It is a step in the right direction.
I religiously followed the show and with every episode, Amit's performance got
better and polished. In Amit, I see myself. Both of us have had our share of
struggles, triumphs and happiness.
Music is all about spreading happiness, love and peace and I hope Amit will
continue to do so.
