Guwahati raises campaign pitch for Amit

Guwahati, Sept. 13: With barely a day left for the countdown to voting for the
new Indian Idol 3, legions of Amit Paul’s fans today trooped onto the streets
in Guwahati from Shillong to garner votes for the new singing sensation of the
Northeast.
Amit has crossed the penultimate hurdle in one of India’s most popular music
talent shows on Sony TV.
Leaving no stone unturned, Shillong Art and Music Lovers Forum, the main force
backing the singer with the “sensuous voice,” even roped in popular Assamese
filmstars Zerifa Wahid and Kapil Bora to campaign for Amit in the city today.
Amit has sung many a song for Kapil in several of his VCD albums and the two
are very good friends.
As the caravan of vehicles with Zerifa and Kapil threaded its way through the
bustling Guwahati streets, the number of diehard Amit fans started swelling.
“Amit is a dear friend of ours and a great singer. We want him to win the
contest and make us all proud. We want all to generously vote for the talented
singer,” Kapil said as the caravan reached the last leg of the daylong
campaign in Maligaon.
Echoing him, Zerifa said: “We want Amit to win the show as he is a great
talent and deserves nothing less than the winner’s crown. We want all to vote
for Amit to help him come up trumps.”
With folded hands and thousand-watt smiles, Zerifa and Kapil requested music
lovers to vote for Amit.
The stars also distributed handouts featuring Amit.
“Shillong and Guwahati are twin cities of the Northeast. If Amit is from
Shillong, it is in Guwahati where he got a break in the Assamese music
industry and crooned several hit numbers for VCD albums. We are here in the
city to appeal to the Guwahatians to vote for Amit. After meeting the music
lovers of the city, we are sure that residents of Guwahati will be sending
their votes for Amit in hordes,” a member of the forum said.
Between Amit and the coveted Indian Idol 3 title lies a hurdle — the charming
singer Prashant Tamang from Darjeeling.
Amit’s path to fame is, however, not entirely hassle-free.
He calls himself a struggling singer who had given up his studies to pursue
his passion, much to his parents’ displeasure.
When the chance to participate in the Indian Idol contest came along, Amit
thought it was a godsend and grabbed the opportunity.
Voted out once, he came back through a wild card and has not looked back
since.
When Amit visited Shillong on August 31 after five months in Mumbai, he was
accorded the homecoming of a hero. His arrival seemed to bridge the divide
between tribals and non-tribals.
t’s supporters are unlikely to take a breather.
PCOs are lined up to do their bit for the Indian Idol favourite.
