The hood is all over the box. I sniff it so very
often nowadays. All this while Ekta Kapoor has done a fabulous job of keeping
the fam frat glued to the television screen. But the times are changing and
her ‘K’ serials are making way for reality TV. It’s not just the families
alone, but even singles get round on the reality square. For starters, reality
talent hunt shows — Indian Idol, Amul Voice of India and Sa Re Ga Ma — are
getting unsurpassed viewership. So when a North-westerner friend from
Darjeeling working as a senior exec in some MNC dropped by, it came as no
surprise when our free-flowing conversation became staccato as the idiot-box
idiotically beamed up some Hindi music talent hunt featuring three kids from
the North-East in the finals. And I was thinking places like Darjeeling, the
vestiges of westernisation in our own backyard, were a bit different. I
couldn’t help but stare back at the 32” idiot of a box with an annoying ‘Et Tu’
expression slapped on my face.
These days our neighbourhood bears a deserted look starting 8:30 PM on Fridays
and Saturdays. On further probe I learnt that it’s talent hunt shows, which
keep them indoors glued to their TV sets. I would have brushed this aside as
one of those unusual interest till I got this text message from another friend
from the North-East who I never thought would succumb to such shows: “Wat
Prashant (the contestant from Darjeeling) need 2 be Indian Idol is Balidan
from d Gorkhas from all over India... Let phone bill cross the limit to make
him the Indian Idol....” And oh my God the kind of reception the participants
get when they visit their hometowns across the country, is unbelievable. Right
from the time these participants step out of the railway stations right up to
public felicitation ceremonies, locals go wild. Not to forget the massive
media coverage they are hogging.
All this points to the viewers’ involvement with the reality shows, especially
the Hindi music that seems to cut across the length and breadth of India.
There seems to be a wave across the country viewers backing the participants
from their regions, to ensure their victory. It is perhaps too early to
predict a resurgence of interest in the language Hindi itself, but it is time
we discussed the power of music and of course, reality shows in removing all
taboos about expressing yourself in Hindi and being proud about it. That
sounds music to my ear.
When my purist Bandra-type NRI friends started chatting with me about hit
Bollywood numbers and Indian Idol winners, I thought it was time to sit-up and
recognise a new pattern. These are the people who have grown-up on western
music, their own cultural influences and predictably faced difficulty with the
Hindi language paper in school. But the music shows have proved the interest
from remote corners, chanting of Hindi numbers and spotting of talent in this
country, which is full of surprises.
This bodes well for the confidence of these talented lots and helps them to
shed all inhibitions to step out into the world that judges them on an equal
platform – the talent. That should draw many more to the harmony of music
amidst tremors of terrorism rocking the country so very often. The binding
power of music has begun to surface and drawing many. I hear many of my
friends who learnt Hindi classical music years back when they were students
and had left it behind, are rediscovering their passion once again surfacing.
I see a healthy diversion emerging for our growing up kids when I see parents
going through bouts of emotions as their children perform on the TV shows. And
of course, marketers may be seeing a powerful platform on which to place their
brand.
