As Shillong lad Amit Paul and the ‘cop’ from Darjeeling Prashant Tamang try to
come to terms with their new-found fame a day before the results of Indian
Idol are to be declared on the day of the grand finale tomorrow, it all comes
down to one crucial factor — the number of SMS votes polled in favour of each
of the two contestants. Indian Idol is one of the most popular shows on Sony
Entertainment Television. SMSs in favour of both the contestants will be
received till 8 am on Sunday morning.

SHILLONG, Sept 22: The countdown for the declaration of the Indian Idol result
having already begun, Shillong is ready to accept whatever is in store for
local lad Amit Paul. The enthusiasm and the love for its idol Amit Paul has
abridged the gap between communities in the State. Whether he wins or loses,
the harmony that has held the State together since past three months would
forever be cherished.
“Whether Amit wins or loses, that won’t matter as long as peace, harmony and
amity is maintained among all sections of people,” the chairman of Shillong
Art and Music Lovers Forum (SAMLF) said here today.
“The people of Meghalaya should accept the mandate, whatever it will be, on
Amit Paul for the sake of his status as Brand Ambassador,” the SAMLF in its
appeal said. Maintaining that there would be no law-and-order problem after
the final result, the SAMLF said the district administration has beefed up
security in certain sensitive areas of the city. As Sunday night would be
“crucial” for the State, and the police on some occasions are “sources of
chaos”, the SAMLF has also approached the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of
Police to ensure that no untoward incident occurs.
Meanwhile, the rally for garnering more votes for Amit continues to hit the
city streets till late last night. People are thronging PCOs set up by
businessmen, individuals and politicians to cast their votes for Amit. “Amit’s
victory will be of a double bliss,” SL Singhania, the Rangbah Shnong (headman)
of Police Bazaar said.
“It will be the happiest moment for Meghalaya and the North-east if Amit wins
the title. But even if he loses, the entire episode will remain symbolic of
the oneness of people from all sections of the society,” Aitilin Nongbri, a
lecturer of Shillong College said.
“Amit is already a winner as he has helped in uniting the region through
music,” said Education Minister of Meghalaya RG Lyngdoh.
For the records, Amit is a Bengali-speaking youth born and brought up in
Shillong.
“We have conferred him the honorary title of Meghalaya’s ‘Brand Ambassador’ to
foster peace, communal harmony, and excellence,” Meghalaya Chief Minister DD
Lapang had announced earlier.
Lapang is personally spearheading the campaign to drum up support for Amit.
“We are all proud of Amit for the success and fame he has received so far. His
achievements have helped people from all walks of life and communities to come
together and this clearly reflects that music has no cultural barriers,” the
Chief Minister said.
From government offices to the tribal king’s durbars, the Chief Minister’s
secretariat to the Raj Bhavan, and schools and colleges — the only topic of
discussion in Meghalaya is the Indian Idol contest.
It is only a matter of a few hours before one of the two will be crowned
winner.
