"Dreaming is good", says Amit
Amit Paul’s modest home in Shillong is festooned with posters, banners and cards. One of them on the gate in an orange magic marker says simply: ‘Amit’s House’.

One month after this sprightly 24-year-old Bengali from Meghalaya came second in the Indian Idol the euphoria over the event that gripped the Indian northeast has subsided a bit, but Amit is still mobbed everywhere he goes in his hometown.

Last week, Amit was here to give a big thank you concert for the benefit of all those who texted to try to make him win.

Amit is a better singer than a speech-giver, and he read nervously from a piece of paper. Coming from a region with diverse autonomy-minded ethnic groups speeches have to be carefully worded.

Mr Big and Amit Paul sizzles at ``Festival of Rock: Shillong``

Shillong, Oct 28: Eric Martin, lead vocalist of international rock band 'Mr Big', set the stage on fire here, as he played his greatest hit ''To Be With you'' for the first time in India in an exclusive concert- ''Festival of Rock: Shillong''.

Thousands of his fans from across the North Eastern states flocked the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium yesterday to soak themselves in the spell of soft love ballads.

Bollywood star Priety Zinta, who was here for the shooting of her next movie 'Har Pal', also made a special appearance at the concert. ''I am enjoying the concert in this beautiful place,'' Ms Zinta said.

The atmosphere was charged up with the first stroke on the guitar and the audiences burst into thunderous clamour as Eric Martin and his Argentinean band members- Charlie Giardine (bass guitar), Christian Vida (guitar) and Pablo Garrochi (drum sets), took the stage. Complete News Here:

Shillong showers love on Amit

SHILLONG: Shillong continued to shower unprecedented love and affection on Amit Paul -- an undisputed local celebrity - when he mingled with his fans at the Soso Tham Hall here on Wednesday.

Rare sights like a Khasi woman gifting her 24-Karat gold chain to Amit Paul and a child getting an autograph of Amit signed on her hand were samples of hero worship witnessed at the auditorium. Complete News Here

Amit may have lost the Indian Idol crown at the last hurdle but to me, he is a hero. Not only is he the idol in his hometown Shillong and the rest of Meghalaya, but an inspiring figure in the entire Northeast.

Guwahati to be first to fete Amit

Guwahati, Sept. 28: Residents of Guwahati will be the first in the Northeast to felicitate Amit Paul — ahead of his hometown Shillong — after his electrifying performance in the musical reality show, Indian Idol III. The show ended last week, with the crowning of Darjeeling’s Prashant Tamang.

Paul will be felicitated on Tuesday during the Guwahati Mahotsav 2007 which starts at the Sonaram Higher Secondary School ground on Sunday.

Amit Paul, who lost out on the Indian Idol crown, will return to his hometown on October 6 to a grand welcome organised by the Meghalaya government, which has appointed him the state’s brand ambassador. Complete News Here

 

Amit is a true idol: Meenakshi Paul

SHILLONG, Sept 24: Stunned and shocked at the ‘defeat’ of their “Brand Ambassador” and singing sensation Amit Paul, Shillongites have graciously accepted the verdict, but are bound to proclaim him ‘hero’ of the State after he was voted runner-up in the music talent hunt, Indian Idol.
Amit’s younger sister Meenakshi Paul, who did not accompany her parents to the Indian Idol finale at New Delhi, said, “Let us celebrate. We have no reason to mourn. My brother created history by winning the hearts of millions which is a far greater achievement. He is the true idol.”
Even though the excitement is over, the euphoria surrounding Amit’s journey in the music world will continue to haunt thousands of his fans. The Scotland of the East is literally silent with most of the mobile phones having been barred since this morning from making outgoing calls. Amit is still pride of State: CM

Shillong: Chief Minister DD Lapang on Monday lauded the people of the State for maintaining peace and harmony after the results of the Indian Idol show, declared on Sunday night, were not in favour of Shillong lad Amit Paul. Amit lost the title to his rival Prashant Tamang from Darjeeling.

"Even though Amit lost the race, he is still the pride of Meghalaya and will remain the torch-bearer for all the youth of the State," the Chief Minister said.

The Chief Minister also hailed the spirit displayed by the people all over the State in extending full support to Amit Paul during his paticipation in the Indian Idol.

He said that the collective support shown by the people of the State was a step towards the direction of obtaining permanent peace and communal harmony in the State.

"Amit Paul has cemented the bond of friendship among all sections of the society irrespective of caste, creed and religion," Mr Lapang said.

Mr Lapang said that the people of the State should not be disappointed.

He further added that the honorary title conferred recently on Amit -- the Ambassador of Peace, Communal Harmony and Excellence -- would remain.

 

Amit loses numbers game; Prashant is Idol

SHILLONG: Despite winning the hearts of many by his golden voice, Amit Paul could not fulfill the dreams of millions of his fans as he lost the battle of votes to Prashant Tamang of Darjeeling, who walked away with the coveted Indian Idol 3 title on Sunday night.

Prashant, a constable with the West Bengal Police, outshone the Shillong lad by a margin of four lakh votes in the grand finale of the popular reality show on Sony Entertainment TV.

As soon as the news of Amit's defeat in the talent hunt contest spread, a pall of gloom descended on Shillong, where thousands of music lovers anxiously were sitting glued to their TV sets and milling around giant screens put up in various parts of the city to know the outcome of the musical event. Many left the places where they were watching the Indian Idol contest on the giant screens.

An otherwise busy Police Bazaar wore a deserted look. Shops downed their shutters and other business establishments were closed.

Followers of Amit made desperate phone calls to the office of this paper to confirm the news after the 'Idol' of their hearts lost the race for the Indian Idol crown. The Shillongites, however, reconciled themselves to the fact that though Amit did not win the title, he would remain their Idol and a household name to be proud of.    Complete News Here

Shillong loses sleep over Amit

The idol mania also seems to have reached a feverish pitch in Shillong with local boy Amit Paul set for the final show-down. TIMES NOW correspondent Nina Sangma finds out more.

The people of Shillong refuse to sleep as the finals of Indian Idol draws closer to the mass hysteria seems to be getting even more manic with people thronging the streets of Shillong at wee hours of the night rallying for their local boy. Amit Paul surely is the man of the moment and his fans are going all out to support their hero.

The story of a boy next door and his sudden rise to fame has given the people of Shillong a new reason to dream. So while Amit waits in anticipation for the results on Sunday the 23rd, his fans are making sure that the votes don't cease to pour in.

While the people of Shillong have their hopes pinned on Amit Paul, one thing's for sure, even as we wait for the final results for most people of Meghalaya he is already a winner.
